TEAM HISTORY
Your United States Air Force Academy Triathlon Team is a Cadet Club sanctioned by USAFA that competes in multiple races across the country every year, representing both the Academy and the US Air Force. It helps to build the future leaders of our country and officers of character and integrity, while encouraging friendly competition. The USAFA Triathlon Team is a member of the Mountain Collegiate Triathlon Conference (MCTC). In 2008, the team hosted it’s first event, the Lindsay Brown Benefit Triathlon. The team got its start in 1990, when a group of Cadets started racing together. This year's Team Guide can be found here.
The Falcon Groundspeed Foundation (FGS) was established in 2008 by alumni of the USAFA Triathlon Team in accomplishing its mission of creating physically fit leaders. The annual September event, put on by FGS and the USAFA Triathlon Team raised over $6000 for the Rando Fund, a charity dedicated to helping cadets fly home in times of family crisis (Information about the race can be found on the latter pages of the website).
In October 2008, the Team competed in the USA Triathlon Club National Championships at the Pumpkinman Triathlon in Las Vegas. The USAFA Triathlon Team scored 64 points to win the Division III National Championship, beating Mulitsports Orange County by 15.5 points*.
The spring 2009 season followed the success of the fall 2008 season. In March, the Team finished 4th at the first ever MCTC Championships in Lake Havasu, AZ. The following month they traveled to Lubbock, TX to compete against 105 other teams from across the country in the USAT Collegiate National Championships. The Team posted an 18th place finish, which marked the fifth consecutive season of finishing in the Top 25.
In May, the Team hosted their second event, the Falcon Grounspeed Triathlon, which despite the weather, was as successful as the Lindsay Brown Triathlon in the fall. Due to a large racer support that has grown, as well as accolades from USAT, they plan on holding both races every year.
The fall 2009 race season was extremely busy. In August, they competed in the Colorado Collegiate State Championships held at the Wild on Windsor Triathlon. The team tied the University of Colorado at Boulder for the Championship, but unfortunately lost the tiebreaker by only three points. Congratulations to both CU and CSU for a great race!
On 14 September, for the eighth year in a row, the team had finishers at IRONMAN Wisconsin. A team record 18 people finished the race, which was everyone who started. Those 18 finishers pushed the total number of USAFA IRONMEN since 2002 to 74! That same weekend, nine cadets raced against Army and Navy in Washington DC for the Commander in Chief Cup. Congratulations to Army and Navy for a great race! We'll see you in April.
On 20 September, the team was unable to defend its Club National Champion title, but raced extremely well to a 3rd place showing.
The spring 2010 race season began in February with a trip to Grants, NM for the Winter Quadrathlon, which included running, biking, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing. The team went into the MCTC Championship race in March leading in total points after 3 races. They had one of the best showings in team history as both the men's team, the women's team, and the coed team finished 2nd. 19 Top 10 team records fell in one race.
On 17 April the team will take the course in Lubbock, TX as they look to improve last year's 18th place finish at the USAT Collegiate National Championship.
Go Falcons, Beat Army, Sink Navy!
*All participants in Division III were entered after the 30 day deadline, so results are unofficial. There was no official club in Divison III.
